Victorian 1896 Pattern Cavalry Officer's Sword
Victorian 1896 Pattern Cavalry Officer's Sword
Origin: British Empire | Culture: British | Period: 19th Century
Sold
A good example of a Victorian 1896 Pattern "Universal" Cavalry Officer's Sword.
Proof mark indicates a Wilkinson trade blade, retailed by Hawkes & Co Piccadilly London.
The guard and scabbard have been painted black. Some records show that some officers would blacken the hilts and scabbards of their swords to reduce glare and avoid drawing unnecessary attention to themselves. However, it is just as likely that the sword was painted black in order to prevent rust and further pitting.
