Proof disc shows "PROVED" and the letter "A".

According to Langham's British Sword Research website, it has been suggested that the A is for Scottish Clothier, William Anderson. Robert Wilkinson-Latham has stated on Sword Forum International that the etching style suggests Armfield (Birmingham button manufacturers).
